Migrate to Microsoft Azure: Is it right for your business?
- Hanu answers challenge to triple input/output speed for Oracle implementation on Microsoft Azure
- Helps new company manage >$325K Azure spend
When a major manufacturer of construction products decided to spin off its home building materials division into an independent company, all related servers and applications needed to be moved from the IT infrastructure to a new home. Seeing the opportunity to reduce both transition and ongoing operating costs, the decision was made to move to a cloud-delivered strategy. The manufacturer felt confident with the choice to migrate to Microsoft Azure.
With the assistance of their former parent company, the new entity evaluated both Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services (AWS). Knowing they’d continue to rely upon Oracle as the backend database for their key ERP core systems, their initial assessment was that Oracle performance on the AWS platform seemed preferable.
Setting the Stage for an Accurate Assessment
Hanu was asked by Microsoft to review the existing virtual machines (VMs), the ERP applications and the Oracle database configuration. Reviewing dozens of logs, Hanu implemented numerous Oracle configuration changes. Noting that current implementations of the ERP and Oracle were not supported by Windows Server 2012 R2, the solution was moved from Windows Server 2008 R2 to Linux to meet performance criteria.
The Best Solution Prevails
With the right configuration and implementation provided by Hanu, the decision was readily made to migrate to Microsoft Azure. The new company engaged Hanu to provide virtual private network (VPN) and networking configuration assistance, Oracle 11g performance tuning, ERP configuration guidance, Microsoft Azure Linux and Windows sizing guidance for 65 VMs and guidance for the effective implementation of best practices-based data backup and recovery for the Oracle environment.
Key Takeaway – A Properly Configured Comparison
The Hanu team recognized that the Azure solution for Oracle being evaluated was not optimally configured, which exposed this new business to the possibility of selecting the wrong platform. Hanu’s deep insight and experience with Microsoft Azure enabled them to deliver the best possible solution to launch this newly independent enterprise.
